Trevor Horne is hoping to put his lessons from his political science studies to practical use.
Horne, 24, is a St. Albert resident and a political science student at MacEwan University. He’s running for the NDP.
“I felt there was a lack of leadership coming from the government and other parties on issues I think matter to families and to my community, and I felt the NDP provides that leadership particularly under Rachel Notley,” Horne said.
Horne originally joined after federal NDP leader Jack Layton died, but has become more active since Notley took the reins of the provincial wing of the party. He decided to run when it seemed no one was planning to step forward to run for the NDP in his riding.
His priorities are a focus on job creation in the face of dropping oil prices.
“I also believe education and health care should be top priorities for our government,” Horne said.
Horne has heard a lot about all three of those topics while he’s been campaigning, and those would be some of his priorities if elected.
“I’ve also heard some people talking about infrastructure, which I think we have a pretty decent plan for,” Horne said. He said that infrastructure would cover schools and hospitals, but also would address infrastructure like roads.
Horne said that plan includes stable, reliable funding for cities to plan for the future.
The student does a lot of reading, listens to music and enjoys cycling when he’s not busy with school or campaigning.
Asked why the voters of Spruce Grove-St. Albert should cast their ballot for him on May 5, he cited the strength of his party.
“I believe that myself, Rachel Notley and the NDP provide the leadership both the riding and the province need to address the issues that matter to families,” Horne said.
As an MLA, he said he’d make sure to keep connected to the community.
“I would definitely try to be out in the community as much as I can,” Horne said.
