Two people are dead after a single-vehicle crash near Morinville early Sunday morning.

The accident occurred early Sunday morning at about 6 a.m. when a car rolled while travelling south on Range Road 235, just north of Highway 28. Jason Johnson, 26, of Edmonton and Craig Atterbury, 21, of Stettler died have been identified as the victims.

According to Morinville RCMP Staff Sgt. Mac Richards, there is no immediate explanation as to why the 2006 Acura rolled, adding the detachment was examining all factors and waiting for results from the medical examiner’s office. He did say there was a possibility neither person was wearing a seatbelt.

“Both were ejected from the vehicle,” Richards said, adding he couldn’t yet say for certain.

Richards said the crash was the worst of several the detachment responded to over the weekend. Besides a handful of accidents, Richards said the detachment had to deal with several cases of impaired driving.

“Throughout the weekend that was an issue for us. All these things combined didn’t make for a good weekend” for safe driving, he said.
