One St. Albert business and a local businesswoman have been nominated for provincial awards for their hard work this year.

The Alberta Chambers of Commerce have nominated Quantum Chemical and Jodie McFadzen, owner of Penzen Ltd., both local companies, for their business of distinction awards.

Quantum Chemical, which won the St. Albert chamber’s small business award of distinction, was nominated in the same category for the provincial association.

Quantum sells and manufactures chemical coatings that are water–based and solvent free. The products are used on transit cars in Edmonton and San Francisco and Dupont has started to use some of Quantum’s products worldwide.

McFadzen was named finalist in the Youth Entrepreneur of the Year. Her business won the home based business of distinction award at the St. Albert chamber event.

McFadzen, the owner and sole employee of the small business, said her business develops architectural, electrical and mechanical manuals.

Essentially after a major project is complete, McFadzen writes a manual that allows a building’s new owner to know about the maintenance of the new facility or about what products went into its construction.

McFadzen said that can be particularly helpful if renovations or repairs are contemplated sometime after the building opens.

McFadzen also does bookkeeping work for several companies.

She said there are few companies who also complete these manuals and she has attracted work from right across the country.

“I have clients in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, pretty much everywhere,” she said. “I am one of the only companies that prepare these manuals.”

Both companies are competing against several other finalists for the awards and are also eligible for the Premier’s Award of Distinction.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony on March 2 at the Marriot River Cree Resort.
