A candidate for the Greater St. Albert Catholic School District board of trustees’ election says he feels it’s a very interesting time to get a seat at the table.
Vince Schiller, a parent of seven children, moved to St. Albert in 1991 from Edmonton. After St. Albert was suggested to him as a place to raise his family, he agreed. “We liked what we saw,” said Schiller Wednesday.
Schiller works for a respected IT company in Edmonton. Why decide to run for the Catholic school board? “I feel the timing is kind of a critical thing,” he said.
“I felt it was quite a unique time.” Schiller said, noting the recent changes as the Catholic division was shifted from a de facto “public” board to a separate board. “It was very interesting.”
Schiller said he feels the shift was typical of the times and that the school division in the past may have been trying to be all things to all people.
With his own children within the system, Schiller said he feels now it’s a time a restoration and renewal of Catholic education.
Looking at issues in the campaign, Schiller said he approaches it the way any parent would. Dealing with the transition from public to separate board, assignment of new schools and other issues of the day will always be there, he noted. He said he wants to be the kind of trustee who looks to the future.
“My feeling is when you are one voice on a board, there is a multiplicity of views to help deal with the day-to-day concerns,” he said.
He pointed out a parent can bring a lot to the board of trustees. “I’m very involved and concerned with the education of my children, and building on the legacy of what we have in this community.”
