A suspicious case found near a St. Albert grocery store contained no explosives, RCMP said. As a precaution, the case was blown up by the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit on Monday.

St. Albert RCMP are now looking for a man who may know something about the case (see second photo).

The man was seen on store security video. He is described as a white, medium to heavy build man in his early 40s with short, red hair, a goatee and moustache. The man was wearing a dark hoodie and a dark ball cap with white lettering or a white stripe on the front.

"He is a person we believe would have knowledge about the case," said Cpl. Laurel Kading with the St. Albert RCMP. "But because we are working of the security cameras in the store, and they are not exactly around the picnic table, we can't confirm that that's exactly the person who left it there."

Suspicious package

St. Albert RCMP closed off parts of the Save-On-Foods parking lot at the north end of St. Albert Trail after a suspicious case was found nearby.

Kading said the small, blue and silver case was discovered on a picnic table east of the store around 9:30 a.m.

RCMP arrived shortly after and closed the parking lot to the north and east of the store. The store remained open to shoppers.

Members of the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit then used a robot to examine the package.

Around 1 p.m, a member of the unit in a bomb suit placed an explosive on top of the case.

The case was blown up shortly after.

No one was harmed and the cordoned off area has been re-opened.

An examination of the area after the explosion showed that the case did not contain any explosives.
