FATAL INCIDENT – A 25-year-old construction worker has died after being hit by a pickup truck in St. Albert on Wednesday afternoon.

A construction worker has died after he was hit by a truck at the intersection of Akins Drive and Hebert Road in St. Albert around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old man from Edmonton was employed by O'Hanlon Paving Ltd. and was part of a road resurfacing crew working at the intersection.

He was struck by the back end of a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by another crew member.

Tristen Popowich, 21, a traffic guard on the construction site, said she was flagging traffic when she heard a loud noise from behind her and saw papers flying. She said a nurse jumped out of her vehicle to start first aid.

Construction workers on scene said the man who was hit was taking samples from the roadway. They said there were four to five workers at the site when it happened.

St. Albert RCMP confirmed the man died around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.

In consideration of the family's wishes, the RCMP are not releasing the man's name.

"The loss of the worker is a great loss and we're working with the families to express … our sorrow," said Thomas Fath, president of O'Hanlon Paving, which has been operating in the Edmonton area since 1956. The company completes regular projects in St. Albert.

Fath said it was the first year on the job for the deceased man.

Fath also said this is the first on-the-job death the company has experienced.

An RCMP collision re-constructionist was called to the scene and the RCMP investigation is ongoing. Occupational Health and Safety is also conducting a separate investigation.

Road, weather, speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the collision.

The RCMP are seeking any witnesses to this collision and is asking anyone who saw this incident happen to call 780 458 7700. As well, anyone affected by this tragedy is entitled to free support and referrals from St. Albert Victim Services (780 458 4353).
