Vandals strike minor ball clubhouse

A local organization will be spending some cash on repairs after vandals broke several large windows at the St. Albert Minor Baseball Association (SAMBA) clubhouse.

At around 10 p.m. on April 15, three witnesses spotted a man fleeing from the building. When they went over, they noticed many of the windows had been smashed out.

Cpl. Laurel Kading said police are trying now to figure who the man was.

“Three people were walking near the minor ball clubhouse and they hear glass breaking and they hear some shouting,” she said. “They see a male running away from the clubhouse and that is our feeling, that is why we think that person is a suspect.”

Kading said because of the distance involved and the time of night, the witnesses do not have a great description of the vandal. They described him as being between 15 and 25 years old. He was wearing dark clothing including a hooded sweatshirt.

Ed Ewasiuk, president of SAMBA, said the damage is going to be a setback.

“We haven’t received an exact quote yet, but it is in the neighbourhood of about $5,000 worth of damage,” he said.

About 10 windows were broken in the incident along with glass on one of the main entrance doors.

Ewasiuk said SAMBA has insurance for the facility, but with a deductible of $2,500 they will be paying a big part of the cost.

He said they have experienced other smaller incidents this year for which they have not submitted claims due to the deductible.

“A lot of the smaller incidents we have to fund ourselves.”

He said those funds have to be made up somewhere in the budget.

“It comes out of the registration fees and it is the membership that ends up paying for it in the end.”

Anyone with any information on the incident or the vandal is being asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or the St. Albert RCMP at 780-458-7700.
