The Fastball St. Albert U19 Angels have been making a big impression this season.

Their 16-5-1 record has caught the attention of fans and opponents alike, marking the team as a force to be reckoned with on the provincial scene.

In large part, this success is the result of the group’s maturity and leadership.

"The team is pretty experienced, with about half of the players being second-year U19s," said coach Damon Clooney. He noted the Angels hail from communities throughout the province, but they have jelled as a team both on and off the diamond.

"The team chemistry has been good," Clooney said. "Some have played for a number of teams and they understand that team chemistry is important for us to perform at the highest level."

This unity has been particularly instrumental in navigating logistical challenges, such as overlapping schedules due to Grade 12 graduations.

"It really is about being creative about managing the roster when we have a short bench," Clooney said.

The Angels were immediately put to the test at the season's start in the Edmonton Ladies Softball League Icebreaker tournament. They passed with flying colours, notching a perfect 5-0 record.

That victory set the tone, propelling the Angels to the semifinals of the Saskatoon Presidents and Calgary Women's Fastpitch Associations tournaments. Among the season's highlights have been some gritty individual performances.

"Cheyenne Brown was a warrior and had to catch five games in two days this past weekend," Clooney said. "Maeve Lavoy hit three home runs this past weekend."

With five home runs, 34 hits, an on-base percentage of 0.657, and a remarkably high batting average of 0.586 on the season, Lavoy has led the Angels’ offensive output.

As the season progresses, the team's collective sights are set on an ambitious target.

"Our ultimate goal would be to qualify for Canadians in Victoria," Clooney remarked. That would require finishing in the top three at provincials.

For the Angels, each day is an opportunity to move one step closer to their target.

"Every week is a journey towards our goals, and we progress and take steps forward," Clooney said.

As they continue to soar towards their goal, the U19 Angels represent the best of what St. Albert athletic programs have to offer, making fans proud.

With their impressive record and notable individual performances, the U19 Angels are definitely a team to watch as they summer months progress.
