The Bellerose Bulldogs remain undefeated in metro Edmonton high school junior football after devouring the Austin O’Brien Crusaders 28-0 in Tuesday’s exhibition at Riel Park field.

Kyle Duperon chewed up the Crusaders for three touchdowns in the first half and added a two-point conversion along the ground. The Bellerose fullback racked up close to 150 yards and averaged more than 10 yards per carry.

Quarterback Dallas Moroz hooked up with slotback Sebastian Doucet for a TD late in the first half.

After putting up 28 points the Bulldogs emptied the bench in the second half.

Connor Petrie was a standout on both sides of the ball and linebacker Marc Waddingham led the team in tackles.

The victory was the third straight for the team of players from the Bellerose and Sturgeon high schools. Last year in the premier conference the Bulldogs didn’t win a game. They scored only 16 points and gave up 189 in seven losses.

This year the Bulldogs are 2-0 in exhibitions and in league play 1-0 in pool B. The Crusaders are 2-0 in pool A and 3-1 overall.

The Bulldogs have two metro games left before the playoffs kick off. They play the winless St. Francis Xavier Rams on Tuesday and the rival St. Albert Hawks (2-0 in pool B and 3-1 overall) Oct. 19. Game times are 6 p.m. at Riel Park.

The top two teams in pools A and B qualify for the Oct. 27 premier semifinals and the rest of the teams compete in the city conference playoffs. The finals are Nov. 4 at Foote Field.

“Even though it was a shutout win we still need to improve in areas to compete in the premier playoffs. There is plenty of room for improvement,” said head coach Chad Hill.

The St. Albert Hawks can clinch first place in their pool with a victory over the rival Bellerose Bulldogs in the last game before the playoffs in metro Edmonton high school junior football. The Oct. 19 showdown in St. Albert kicks off at 6 p.m. at Riel Park field.

In the last eight tilts against the Bulldogs the Hawks won 7-0 and 28-7 last year, 27-3 in 2008, 60-20 in 2007, 20-13 and 34-0 (premier semifinal) in 2006 and 16-8 and 29-9 (premier final) in 2005.

In league play the Hawks improved to 2-0 in Tuesday’s 50-19 drubbing of the O’Leary Spartans (1-2) in St. Albert. After a shaky start the Hawks finished with a bang in posting their third win overall in four games.

Last year the Hawks went 4-4 as the premier division finalists. The 10-1 loss to the Salisbury Sabres in the final was the second straight appearance in the championship game by the Hawks and their fifth in six years. The last premier title for the team of players from the St. Albert Catholic and Paul Kane high schools was their third in a row in 2006.
