Gareth Jones Cup

The Gareth Jones Cup will be awarded at Friday’s exhibition between the Bellerose Bulldogs and Paul Kane Blues in high school women’s rugby.

Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

Bellerose was the inaugural winner of the female Gareth Jones Cup at the first and only St. Albert high schools’ tournament in 2012 and Paul Kane beat the Bulldogs 30-5 in the 2016 metro Edmonton division one showdown.

Both teams posted winning records this season. Paul Kane finished 5-2 (166 PF/161 PA) as the division two finalist and both losses were against the undefeated Harry Ainlay Titans – 62-7 in league play and 27-12 in the May 31 final. Bellerose was 6-1 (305 PF/106 PA) as division one semifinalist after the 55-27 semifinal loss May 28 to the Bev Facey Falcons, this year's playoff champions for a record seventh time in a row.

Last weekend’s Bellerose graduation conflicted with the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association provincials in Calgary and the Bulldogs were unable to get the numbers to field a team in the metro Edmonton qualifier against the McNally Tigers (5-2). The winner would join Facey (5-3) at Tier 1 provincials. McNally placed fourth and Facey won the consolation side of the eight-team draw.

Tigers baseball

The St. Albert Tigers swing for the fences tonight in the Sunburst Baseball League.

Game time is 7 p.m. against the Sherwood Park Athletics (2-5) at Centennial Park.

Friday the Tigers (2-3) host the Red Deer Riggers (3-1), last year’s senior AAA Sunburst champions, at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

Next weekend is the Tigers Baseball Association tournament.

Crude lacrosse

Thursday’s home game for the St. Albert Crude against the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels starts at 9 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Rebels (6-3) and Crude (3-8) are ranked second and third, respectively, in the junior B Tier I north division in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

The Crude are winless in two games after posting back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

The losses were 21-7 Friday against the first-place Edmonton Warriors (8-4) at Bill Hunter Arena and 12-7 Saturday against the Calgary Mountaineers (8-6) of the south division at Acadia Recreation Centre.

This weekend, the Crude host the Manitoba Blizzard (7-0) of the east division at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s game against the fourth-place Sherwood Park Titans (1-8) is 2:30 p.m. at Strathcona Olympiette Centre.
