The deadline to submit applications for the third annual John Reid Memorial Scholarship is Jan. 10. The $1,000 scholarship is open to any player who played bantam AAA hockey for St. Albert and, after the 2004/05 season, played hockey in St.

The $1,000 scholarship is open to any player who played bantam AAA hockey for St. Albert and, after the 2004/05 season, played hockey in St. Albert for a minimum of three years, is an Alberta resident and Canadian citizen and is enrolled in a recognized post-secondary education institution.

Applicants must also write a 250-word paper on what playing bantam AAA hockey in St. Albert meant to them while listing future plans and financial obligations for those plans.

The selection committee is made up of at least two people not related to any applicants from the John Reid Memorial Tournament Society Board, plus one member of the Reid family.

The winner will be announced during the Jan. 20 opening ceremonies of the John Reid Memorial Tournament at Servus Credit Union Place. Previous recipients were Justin Kueber and Joshua Maeda.

The 33rd annual St. Albert bantam AAA tournament was renamed in 2004 to honour John Reid, a former St. Albert Saint and Sherwood Park Crusader in the Alberta Junior Hockey League who also played for the Alberta Golden Bears. He also coached minor hockey and lacrosse teams in St. Albert. He died of leukemia at the age of 41 on Nov. 6, 2003.

The St. Albert Flyers improved to 6-1 in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League with a pair of home-ice victories last weekend.

Only the Spruce Grove PAC Saints (7-0-1) have a better record than the Flyers in the north conference standings.

Braeden Farge’s second goal in period three was the game winner with 4:29 to play, as the Flyers rallied to edge the Sherwood Park Squires 3-2. The Squires (5-1-2) held period leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Brenden Cunningham also scored. The Flyers were outshot 44-22. In net was Landon Bow.

In the 5-4 win over the Grande Prairie Storm, Luc Lalor put the Flyers ahead to stay at 3:30 in period three. Jake Mykitiuk led all scorers with two goals for eight on the season, plus two assists. His 18 points in seven games is tops in the conference

Cunningham and Sebastien Auray also tallied against the Storm (0-6). Tanner McCorriston stopped 20 shots. Storm goalie Brett Clark faced 53 shots.

Today at 2:30 p.m. the Flyers play the Lloydminster Rage (3-2-2) in the Border City.

The St. Albert Raiders suffered a pair of losses last weekend in bantam AAA female hockey.

The Raiders (3-3-2) fell 7-2 to the south division-leading Calgary Outlaws (5-3) in St. Albert and dropped a 3-1 decision to the Lloydminster Ice Cats (4-2-1) in the Border City.

Denzelle Bourgeois and Megan Lalor scored against Calgary. The Raiders were outshot 33-16. In net was Sarah Murray.

Eva Lovsin supplied the offence against the Ice Dogs, who took over first place in the north with the win. Murray faced 16 shots. Kayal Robinson turned aside 27 St. Albert shots.

Tonight at 7:45 p.m. the Raiders host the Edmonton Lightning (3-2-1) at Performance Arena.
