Tip-off is 4:45 p.m. today between the St. Albert Skyhawks and Bellerose Bulldogs at the Home of the Hounds.

Last week the metro Edmonton city conference varsity men’s basketball teams played an exhibition at the SkyDome and the Skyhawks prevailed 63-59.

The St. Albert Sabres have a big game scheduled Saturday against the only team to beat them so far this season in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Game time is 2 p.m. at Sherwood Park Arena between the Sabres (13-2-5) and Sherwood Park Flyers (12-2-5). They are ranked first and second, respectively, in the nitro north division. In previous tilts the Flyers posted victories of 6-0 in October and 4-2 last month.

The Sabres are coming off an 8-3 thumping of the Canadian Athletic Club (1-17-3) Saturday at Akinsdale Arena. Braenden Farge and Shane Bowzaylo potted a pair each and Luke Mahura had one goal and three assists. Brett Smythe, Ty Stanton and Sebastien Auray also scored. Bowzaylo, Stanton and Jake Mykitiuk collected two assists apiece. Landon Bow stopped 11 shots in the St. Albert net.

The Paul Kane Blues were victorious in the junior girls’ division at the REB Invitational Basketball Tournament at Jasper Place High School.

In Saturday’s final the Blues defeated the Strathcona Lords 60-55. The game all-star was Brooke Bell, a Grade 10 guard/forward. The tournament MVP was Grade 10 guard Melissa Woolley.

In Friday’s semifinal, the Blues overpowered the St. Joseph’s Guardians of Saskatoon 88-45. Grade 10 guard/forward Joanna Long and Grade 11 guard/forward Devon Beaulier led the way offensively.

The Blues opened the eight-team draw with a tight 49-45 decision against the Harry Ainlay Titans. Beaulier scored 12 of her team-high 21 points in the second half.

The defending metro Edmonton premier conference champions are carrying four Grade 11s on their roster.

“Our team is short overall, but the girls have a lot of speed and versatility in the positions that they can play,” Hutchinson said.

Last week the Blues tipped off league play with a resounding 68-13 win over the St. Francis Xavier Rams. Tuesday they hosted the Salisbury Sabres but the score was unavailable at press time. At 4:45 p.m. Thursday the St. Albert Skyhawks (0-2) visit Paul Kane.
