The 2010 Family Day Classic, hosted by the St. Albert Soccer Association (SASA), is under way at Servus Credit Union Place.

Historically the tournament has catered to tier I and II teams but due to the number of Alberta Soccer Association sanctioned tournaments for tiers I and II during the Family Day weekend, SASA decided to opened up this year’s tournament to tier III and community youth teams instead.

Fifty-eight teams were confirmed for the four-day tournament. Age divisions are U12 boys’ tiers III/IV, U12 girls’ tiers V/VI, U14 boys’ tiers III/IV, U14 girls’ tiers III/IV and V/VI/VII, U16 girls’ tiers III/IV and V/VI/VII, U16 boys’ tiers III/IV, U18 girls’ tiers III/IV and V/VI, as well as division one women and co-ed.

The fourth gold medal in five tournaments for the St. Albert petite B Luna Chix was celebrated at the Edmonton Silver Ring.

In Sunday’s final the team of 10- and 11-year-olds edged the Sherwood Park Shock 4-3 to finish undefeated in the tournament.

They advanced into the gold-medal game with wins of 12-3 against the Edmonton Storm, 5-2 against the Shock, 10-3 against the Edmonton Phantoms and 10-0 in the semifinal against the Edmonton Fire.

Previous tournament triumphs were the St. Albert Turkey Ring, Beaumont Brass Ring and Red Deer Friends on Ice.

The team’s overall record is 32-2-2, with both losses in tournament play; the first game of the season at the Turkey Ring and the Sherwood Park Platinum Ring final.

With one game to go in the Black Gold League, the Luna Chix are undefeated except for two ties.

Meanwhile, the provincial zone playoffs start at the end of the month. Provincials are March 26 to 28 at Medicine Hat.
