The St. Albert Gymnastics Club hosts the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Northern Zone Championships this weekend at the Riel Drive facility.

The competition determines the northern Alberta qualifiers for the April 16 to 18 provincials, hosted by the Dynamyx Gymnastics Club of St. Albert at Performance Arena.

The top 12 all-around ranked provincial level 2 and 3 gymnasts per age group and level advance.

Gymnasts at provincial level 1 will also perform at the meet.

The Alberta Gymnastics Federation sanction meet will bring together 158 gymnasts from 16 clubs.

There are three sessions Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and two sessions Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The St. Albert Impact U14 tier II boys were victorious at the Slush Cup indoor soccer tournament in Edmonton.

In Sunday’s final Daniel Barker-Rothschild booted three goals as the Impact doubled the Calgary Chinook Hammers 6-3. Andriy Peknyi, Daniel Sperling and Michael Fiacco also scored.

After losing their first game 4-1 to the Edmonton West Warriors, the Impact rebounded to blank the Calgary Blizzard Blitz 3-0 for a berth in the crossover playoff.

Next weekend the U14 tier II boys’ provincial tournament kicks off at Servus Credit Union Place. The nine-team draw is divided into three pools. Impact is grouped with Medicine Hat and Calgary No. 1. The gold medal game is March 21 at 12:30 p.m.

The 25th annual St. Albert 10-miler surpassed the 190 mark in registrations for the April 18 road race, hosted by the St. Albert Roadrunners and Triathlon Club.

Entry fees are $45 online through www.eventsonline.ca, $55 mailed in or dropped off at Cranky’s Bike Shop or the Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club (SVAC) and $65 on race day at Grandin mall. Race time is 9:30 a.m.

The course record for runners is 976 in 1998.

Last year, out of 730 runners registered, 651 finished the race. The winner was Brian Torrance in 54 minutes and 25 seconds. The fastest female was Tara Struyk in 1:01:32.

The 10-miler is sanctioned by Athletics Alberta and is part of the TIMEX Canadian Road Race Series.
