The 2010 Artistic Gymnastics Provincial Championships/Trials to Canadians continues this weekend at Servus Credit Union Place.

The competition started Friday morning, and goes today from 9:05 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Performance Arena.

The schedule is online at www.dynamyxgymnastics.com

Approximately 500 athletes from across Alberta, including 21 males and females from the host Dynamyx Gymnastics Club of St. Albert and 14 females from the St. Albert Gymnastics Club, are performing for medals. Several gymnasts are nationally ranked and some are deemed Olympic hopefuls for 2012.

More than 350 volunteers are helping out to ensure the event is a success.

Day tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students/seniors and $25 for a family of four. Meet passes are $20 for adults and $40 for a family of four. Alberta Gymnastic Federation members receive $1 off tickets. Children five years and under get in free.

Metro Edmonton high school rugby scrums down Tuesday, as the Battle of St. Albert between the Bellerose Bulldogs and Paul Kane Blues kicks off the women’s fixtures. Game time is 4:45 p.m. at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

Bellerose, Paul Kane, the Sturgeon Spirits (2009 premier conference champions and provincial tier I bronze medallists), O’Leary Spartans and Fort Saskatchewan Sting make up the north pool.

The top three women’s teams in the north and south pools compete for premier honours. The bottom two teams in both pools qualify for the city conference playoffs.

In the men’s north pool Wednesday, Bellerose tackles Sturgeon (2009 premier conference champions and provincial tier I fourth-place finishers) at the Pirates club. Paul Kane and the St. Albert Skyhawks also host the St. Francis Xavier Rams and O’Leary, respectively, at 4:45 p.m. in St. Albert. The Skyhawks are back on the pitch after a one-year absence.

The three best teams in the north and south pools advance into the premier bracket. The bottom three teams in both pools challenge for the city title.

The puck drops Wednesday for eight bantam AAA players with the St. Albert Sabres at the Alberta Cup in Leduc.

The Northwest Sharks roster includes goalie Mitchell Martell, defencemen Tyler Dea, Jeff Harrison and Jakob Lavoie and forwards Sebastien Auray, Taylor Fontaine, Luke Mahura and Jake Mykitiuk of the Sabres.

The Alberta Cup helps identify the top male bantam-aged players in the province as scouts prepare for the Western Hockey League’s bantam draft.

In addition to player evaluations, the competition is also an opportunity for administrators, coaches, trainers and referees to be evaluated for future positions with the Team Alberta U17 program.

The eight-team tournament wraps up April 25. Visit www.hockeyalberta.ca for the schedule.
