Today’s tripleheader at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club kicks off its home fixtures for the 2010 season.

Game times at the Leading Edge Physiotherapy Fields are 12:30 p.m. for the men’s third division, 1 p.m. for the Alberta premier women and 3 p.m. for the men’s Alberta Cup. Visit www.stalbertrugby.com and www.edmontonrugby for updates.

Last year the thirds finished 10-5 in the Edmonton Rugby Union (ERU) as the Visser Cup finalists for the second season in a row.

The women’s first 15 are coming off a banner 13-1 triple-crown campaign as the ERU’s second division pennant and playoff winners and Alberta Rugby Union provincial champions.

The men’s first 15 rattled off 13 straight wins en route to their second consecutive provincial final, only to lose 24-22 to the Calgary Hornets. The firsts also lost the 2008 final 24-10 to the Calgary Saints to finish 13-3-1 after going 18-1 as the 2007 Lor-Ann Cup province second division champions.

Also making its debut today is the solar-powered electronic scoreboard on the first field.

St. Albert swimmers with the Olympian Swim Club have been recognized for their strong performances in the pool.

Braeden Newton and Natasha Fung earned spots on Swim Canada’s national talent identification teams. To be selected, a swimmer had to be ranked first in an Olympic event in their age group in the country this past short course season.

Aiden Friesen, Fred Kamminga, Noah Lubberding, Julia Marchand and Alyssa McNamara qualified for the Alberta north/south dual tour team. It consisted of the top-ranking 11- and 12-year-old athletes, with 16 boys and girls from northern and southern Alberta.

Emily Flowers, Paige Kremer and Berkley Nowlan also swam for Team Alberta at the recent Best of the West meet in Kamloops.

At the Edmonton Keyano International Meet last weekend in Edmonton, Kremer was the girls’ 13-14 aggregate award winner with gold medals in all but one of her eight individual events. Overall, including relays, she won 11 gold, one silver and one bronze.

Eleven players from the Zone 5 AA Ringette Club, including six St. Albert products, have advanced to the next round of the Team Alberta tryouts for the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax.

The St. Albert reps are defencemen Rachelle Davies and Nicole Stadnyk and forwards Jill Basterash, Tasha Bryenton, Katie Fenton and Kennedie Wolosyn.

The zone 5 players will be joined by 20 other hopefuls to form two teams at the 12-team tournament in Ottawa, starting May 20.

The final Alberta roster will consist of 22 players.
