A victory Tuesday by the St. Albert Skyhawks would catapult the women’s soccer team into Thursday’s city conference final in the metro Edmonton high school league. The score between the Skyhawks and Louis St. Laurent Barons was unavailable at press time.

The winner will play the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders (7-0) or Austin O’Brien Crusaders (4-3) at 4 p.m. at Victoria Soccer Club.

The Skyhawks and Barons tied for second place with 5-2 records. In the April 27 season opener the Skyhawks beat the Barons 6-1.

The Skyhawks finished league-play with 33 goals, one less than the league-leading Marauders.

The last city soccer championship for the lady Skyhawks was 2001.

The metro Edmonton high school women’s rugby championships in the premier and city conferences kick off today at 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

The main event is the premier final between the Sturgeon Spirits (5-0) and Paul Kane Blues (5-1). Sturgeon is gunning for its fourth premier title in five years. The last premier celebration by Paul Kane was a 10-5 win over the Spirits in 2008. The Big Red Machine hasn’t lost a league game since that championship defeat.

Sturgeon, last year’s tier I (4A schools) provincial bronze medallists, has been unstoppable this season while averaging 53.5 points per win, all by shutouts.

In the north pool fixtures the Spirits hammered Paul Kane 56-0. Last year they crushed the Blues 51-5 in league play and 48-0 in the playoffs.

In Thursday’s semifinals, Sturgeon caged the Leduc Tigers 49-0 as Tamara Farmer paced the attack with three tries. Paul Kane pulled off a gutsy 10-0 decision over the Bev Facey Falcons (4-1), the south pool leaders. Carmen Chornell and Seaneen Passek scored tries as the Blues qualified for their ninth premier final in 11 years.

Sturgeon, Paul Kane and the Bev Facey will also represent the metro league at the tier I provincials, June 11 to 12 at Fort McLeod.

The city final features the Bellerose Bulldogs (2-3) and Archbishop Jordan Scots (1-3). Both teams finished fourth in their respective pools. The top three teams in both the north and south pools made the premier playoffs.

In exhibition play April 27, Bellerose thumped the Scots 43-0.

The Bulldogs advanced to the final with a 70-5 blowout of the winless Salisbury Sabres last week. Sabrina Sulz racked up three tries and Viveca Robinson added two tries and kicked four conversions. Kaleigh Herald and Nattiya Thatset also recorded two tries apiece.

Bellerose is striving for its first women’s rugby championship in school history.

The Scots gained a bye into the final after the winless Fort Saskatchewan Sting from the north pool declined to participate in the playoffs.
