The St. Albert premier women’s rugby squad was scheduled to take to the pitch on its home field today, looking for its first win, but got it the easy way. Instead of having to fight for the points with the Southern Alberta Selects, it got the win by forfeit. Going into the game, St. Albert was 0-6 with just 18 points scored and 453 against. St. Albert is now fourth in the standings with the Selects now being the winless team (no wins and four losses and one default). The women have four games remaining in their regular season schedule. The next match is July 24 when they visit the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club.

Meanwhile, the Alberta Cup St. Albert premier men will be in action at Ellerslie Rugby Park today at 4 p.m., pushed back one hour from the previously scheduled time. St. Albert sits third in the 10-team circuit with a 4-1 record. Last year’s regular season champions will have a good chance to continue their climb up the standings today when they take on the Lep-Tigers (0-4). St. Albert is coming off a big 57-7 win over Red Deer (3-4) on June 26.

Also going to battle today, at 3 p.m. will be St. Albert’s second division men’s team, attempting to go above .500. They currently sit at 4-4. They’ll face the Grande Prairie Centaurs, who are nipping at their heels in the standings (2-3-1). With their points from wins, along with bonus points, St. Albert has 21 points, tying them for first in the league, but sit in fourth because of the points for-against differential. They’ve also played more games than any of the teams they are tied with. St. Albert is coming off a tight 31-24 loss to the Clansmen on June 30 (4-1 and in first place in the standings).

On Wednesday, the division two St. Albert women fell 40-17 to the Leduc Crude-West (5-2). The loss gave St. Albert their seventh loss of the season and they have yet to record a win. Their next game is on July 17 when they visit Grande Prairie to take on the winless Sirens.

The midget AAA St. Albert Cardinals have won seven straight games and are back in action Tuesday in Sherwood Park against the As. The Cardinals’ overall record is 13-12 and their league record is 9-11. The Cardinals will be back at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Legion Memorial Ball Park in the battle of the Red Birds when they take on the powerful SEEBA 1 Cardinals. The Edmonton Cardinals lead the season series 4-0.

The St. Albert Rugby Football Club hosts a mini festival and U14 prairie tournament today at its Riel Drive facility.

The prairie tournament will be played from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the other age divisions will play shorter sessions. Each of the teams in U8, U10 and U12 will play from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The U15 teams will play from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A complimentary breakfast will be served from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
