President’s Cup

The drive for four at the President’s Cup starts Sunday for the reigning champion St. Albert Miners at Kahnawake, Que.

The winners of three-consecutive President’s Cups and 2014 bronze medallists play the Akwesasne Bucks of Can-Am Lacrosse League in the opening game of the eight-team senior B national lacrosse tournament.

The rest of the games are as follows:

Monday versus Capital Region Axemen (Quebec Senior Lacrosse League).

Tuesday versus Six Nations Rivermen (Ontario Lacrosse Association).

Wednesday versus Team Nova Scotia.

Thursday versus Ladner Pioneers (West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association).

Friday versus Snake Island Muskies (Three Nations Senior Lacrosse League).

Saturday versus the host Kahnawake Mohawks (Quebec league).

The Miners are competing in their fifth President’s Cup in six years and the seventh since 2010 after the team’s fourth-straight Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League provincial championship. The three-game sweep of the Calgary Mountaineers completed a 6-0 playoff run as the Miners extend their winning streak to 21 games after the May 3 season-opening 13-9 loss to the Beaumont Outlaws.

The Miners are also 108-5-2 overall after losing the 2015 provincial final.

U13 Tier I soccer

Pool play ends today for three St. Albert Impact teams at the U13 Tier I male and female soccer provincials at Riel Park.

In the eight-team male division, the group one matches for Impact Ashworth are 9:15 a.m. against the Warriors and 2:45 p.m. against Springbank FC.

In group two, Impact Jones plays Juventus at 9 a.m. and Foothills FC at 2:45 p.m.

Impact Valenzuela is among eight female teams and the group two matches are 11:15 a.m. against Sherwood Park Phoenix and 4:30 p.m. against Red Deer Renegades.

Sunday’s crossover medal finals are 12:45 p.m. for bronze and 1 p.m. for gold/silver.

Friday’s scores between Impact Ashworth and Villians FC, Impact Jones versus LFC Warriors and Impact Valenzuela against Blizzard SC were unavailable at press time.

Football games

The St. Albert Minor Football Association hosts Sunday’s season-opening doubleheader at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The Edmonton Seahawks are the visitors against the peewee Riders at 9:30 a.m. and the bantam Fury at 12 noon in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

Meanwhile, the peewee Colts are in Camrose today to play the Buffaloes at 10 a.m. and Sunday’s bantam game between the 49ers and Edmonton Chargers kicks off at 9:30 a.m. at W.P. Wagner Sports Fields.
