As of Monday, 22 teams were confirmed for the men (five), women A (five), women B (six) and 18-plus co-ed (six) divisions. Only a handful of teams have St. Albert connections. Entries include teams from as far away as Calgary, Lloydminster, Fort McMurray and Fort St. John, B.C.

Games will be played at Forest Park north, Poplar, Grosvenor, Salisbury, Eldorado, Riel Park artificial turf and the SASA fields.

The rematch of the 2009 Alberta Cup final between St. Albert and the Calgary Hornets on Saturday was cancelled because of a water main break that flooded the fields at the Calgary Irish rugby club.

The premier men’s showdown was one of six matches at the Irish facility that failed to kick off because of wet field conditions. However, a source told the Gazette the fields looked playable on Friday, prior to the official announcement of the cancellation.

The Calgary Rugby Park was also unavailable for senior division matches Saturday because of the Rugby Canada Age Grade National Festival, which forced a number of games to be moved to the Irish facility Saturday.

It was unclear at press time if St. Albert and the Hornets would scrum down before the Sept. 11 quarter-finals. They were originally scheduled to battle May 29 in Calgary but were snowed out.

Both teams have 8-1 records, with St. Albert trailing the Hornets by three bonus points for first place honours.

Last year St. Albert lost only one game after rolling up 13 straight wins, as the Hornets shocked the 2008 provincial finalists 24-22 for the playoff cup.

This Saturday the two-time reigning premier pennant winners host the eighth-place Lep/Tigers (1-7-1) at 3 p.m. at the Leading Edge Physiotherapy Fields. The last home game before the playoffs is Aug. 28 against the third-place Calgary Irish (6-4) at 5 p.m.
