The winner of tonight’s playoff between St. Albert and the Lep/Tigers in second division women’s rugby will be crowned the Edmonton Rugby Union (ERU) shield champions.

The last women’s rugby game of the season in St. Albert kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Leading Edge Physiotherapy Fields.

In league play, the Lep/Tigers defeated St. Albert 55-7 in May and 30-0 in June.

The top four ERU teams qualified for the playoff semifinals and the next three best teams were slotted into the round-robin consolation bracket. St. Albert (1-9) finished seventh out of eight teams. The Lep/Tigers (5-5) were fifth and the Strathcona Druids (4-5) placed sixth.

Last week St. Albert beat the Druids 20-5 in Sherwood Park.

Thursday’s semifinals in the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League will be staged at Riel Park field.

At 6:30 p.m. SA United (12-2-1) takes on Strike Force (10-4) and at 8:15 p.m. Chester City (11-2) battles Arsenal (6-6-3).

The winners advance to Sunday’s final at 3 p.m. on the premier pitch at the St. Albert Soccer Association.

Chester City and SA United will also represent the league at the tier III provincials, Sept. 10 to 12 in Edmonton. They finished first and second, respectively, in the league fixtures.

The line-up for Saturday’s tripleheader at the Riel Park field for St. Albert teams in the Capital District Minor Football Association is as follows:

11 a.m. atom: Jaguars vs. Sherwood Park Broncos.

12:30 p.m. bantam: Fury vs. Sherwood Park Rams.

3 p.m. peewee: Colts vs. Riders.

The puck drops Friday for the St. Albert Steel, as the four-team pre-season tournament gets under way in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Game time is 5 p.m. against the Spruce Grove Saints at Sherwood Park.

The Steel skate Saturday in Spruce Grove at 9 a.m. against the Sherwood Park Crusaders and 5 p.m. against the Drayton Valley Thunder.

The tournament wraps up Sunday at Servus Credit Union Place with the B final at 2 p.m. and the A final at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults, $8 seniors, $6 students, $4 children with free admission for youths six years and under.

Next week the Steel and Crusaders have exhibitions scheduled for Thursday in St. Albert and Saturday in Sherwood Park. Faceoff times are 7 p.m.

League play starts Sept. 10, with the Steel hosting the Drumheller Dragons at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, game day Steel volunteers are needed for the upcoming season. Positions include ticket sales, 50/50 sales, souvenir sales and off-ice officials, including goal judges, timekeeper and scorekeeper.
