Saturday is Jarome Iginla Day in St. Albert.

The City of St. Albert will honour the Olympic gold medallist with a ceremony at Seven Hills from 1 to 3 p.m. In the event of poor weather, the special event will be held at Servus Credit Union Place.

Hosted by Adam Cook of CTV, the program will feature the singing of O Canada by members of the Iginla family, a formal presentation by Mayor Nolan Crouse to the pride of St. Albert and an autograph session for youths under 18 years of age at 2 p.m. Maximum is one autograph per youth.

The festivities are part of the city’s effort to recognize the Olympic athletes from St. Albert that competed at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

Iginla assisted on Sidney Crosby’s goal in overtime, as Canada beat the United States 3-2 in the gold medal game. It was Iginla’s seventh point of the tournament. He led all scorers with five goals in seven games. The gold medal was also the second of his illustrious career.

The 33-year-old Calgary Flames’ captain is the franchise leader in games played (1,024), goals (441) and points (920), and is second in assists with 479, behind Al MacInnis’ 609.

In 2009/10 the all-star right-winger scored 32 goals, marking the ninth season in a row he surpassed 30 or more goals. He was also the Flames’ top point producer for the ninth straight year with 69 in 82 games.

Thursday’s doubleheader in exhibition high school football at the Riel Park field kicks off at 5 p.m. between the metro Edmonton league’s Carr conference St. Albert High Skyhawks and the Edmonton public league Spruce Grove Panthers.

The Bulldogs are coming off a game against the Santana Sultans last weekend in California. Santana High School is located about 20 minutes outside of San Diego. The Bulldogs lost 4 scores to 0. Their starting defence gave up 2 scores. The Bulldogs stopped Santana’s running game but gave up a couple of big plays through the air. On offence, they had some success running the ball with Devin Kondro and Grayson Baker.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs lost the services of defensive end Dillion Samms with a broken hand. He is out indefinitely.
