High school volleyball for St. Albert’s premier women’s teams continues today in the metro Edmonton league.

The Paul Kane Blues (4-1, 13 GW/3 GL) visit the Ardrossan Bisons (3-2) at 4:45 p.m. The only loss in league play for the Blues was the 3-1 setback to the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders (2-2) Oct. 4. The seventh-place finisher at the 2009 4A provincials (4-3 record) was the only metro team to be ranked recently. The Blues earned an honourable mention in week two of the 4A rankings.

At 4:45 p.m. the Bellerose Bulldogs (2-3, 9 GW/11 GL) host the Marauders. Last year at 4A provincials the Bulldogs placed 10th (5-2 record).

In a battle of 3A provincial hopefuls, the St. Albert Skyhawks (3-1, 11GW/5 GL) travel to play the Holy Trinity Trojans (5-0) at 6:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, the 16th annual Lions Western Canadian Challenge starts Oct. 21 at the Bellerose, Paul Kane, St. Albert High and Morinville high schools. Twenty-four men’s and 24 women’s teams will compete for medals. The lady Blues and the Steinbach (Man.) Sabres are the defending champions.

A victory Thursday over the Salisbury Sabres would lift the St. Albert High Skyhawks into second place in the metro Edmonton league’s Carr conference. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Strathcona Athletic Park.

Both teams are 2-1 in conference play and 3-2 overall. In tier I (school population 1,250-plus) the Sabres are ranked 10th in the province and the Skyhawks are unranked.

The Skyhawks are coming off a 7-0 loss to the Bellerose Bulldogs (2-1-1) in the Battle of St. Albert. The Bulldogs have the bye week.

The regular season wraps up Oct. 21 with a doubleheader at Riel Park field. At 5 p.m. the Skyhawks host the Bev Facey Falcons (4-0 in Carr and 5-0 overall). The three-time reigning Carr champions and last year’s tier I provincial finalists are ranked second in tier I. At 7:30 p.m. the Bulldogs tackle the Sabres.

All six Carr teams make the playoffs. The top two finishers earn first-round byes.

The St. Albert Raiders have two games scheduled this weekend in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

Saturday the Raiders (2-1-1) face-off against the KC Pats (3-0) at 5:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena. Sunday they host the Southside Athletic Club (2-2) at 2:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Last weekend on the road the Raiders (2-1-1) beat the winless Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-1 and lost a tight 1-0 contest to the undefeated Calgary Flames.
