The metro Edmonton premier semifinals in high school junior football kick off today at Johnny Bright Park. At 5 p.m. the St. Albert Hawks (2-1 in pool B; 3-2 overall) line up against the Salisbury Sabres (3-1 in pool A; 4-1 overall). At 7:30 p.m.

At 7:30 p.m. the Bulldogs (3-0 in pool B; 5-0 overall) tackle the Bev Facey Falcons (3-1 in pool A; 5-1 overall).

Admission is $5.

The final is Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Foote Field.

In the 2009 final the Hawks lost 10-1 to Salisbury. It was their second appearance in the premier final and the fifth in six years. The team’s last premier championship was 2006.

The Bulldogs haven’t reached the premier final since 2005, a 29-9 loss to the Hawks in which Bellerose led 1-0 after three quarters.

Tonight at 7:45 p.m., the St. Albert Sabres host the Maple Leafs at Akinsdale Arena.

In the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League’s Nitro north division, the Sabres (3-3-3) share second place with the SSAC Southgate Lions (3-1-3) and the Leafs (0-7-1) are in last place.

The Sabres are coming off a 2-2 draw Sunday against the Lions at Millwoods Arena. The Lions tallied twice in period three, with the tying marker scored with 3:40 to play. Brett Van Os and Paul Lovsin potted goals in the second. Brett Smythe’s assist on Lovsin’s fifth goal of the season was his team-leading 11th point.

Shots were 33-27 for St. Albert. In net was Patrick Gora (2-2-2, 2.27 GAA).

At 8 p.m. Saturday the Sabres play CAC Lehigh Cement (2-4) at Akinsdale.

The St. Albert Merchants close out their October schedule with two games this weekend in the Capital Junior B Hockey League

Friday at 8 p.m. the Merchants (4-7) host the east division-leading Edmonton Royals (10-2) at Akinsdale Arena and Sunday they visit the Morinville Jets (4-7-0-1) at 2 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

The Merchants are 3-3 at home and 1-4 on the road.

The sixth loss in eight games for the Merchants was Sunday’s 6-4 setback against the Spruce Grove Regals (7-3-0-2) in St. Albert. The Regals rallied from a 4-2 decision with four unanswered goals in period three.

Scoring for the Merchants were Chris Clark, Dustin Robinson, Kyle Beddows and Zack Caines. Jake Behiels had two assists. In net was Curtis Ronaldson.
