In the north conference the Flyers (15-4) dropped down to third place after Sunday’s 3-2 road loss against the Lloydminster Rage (11-5-4). They are six points back of the first-place Sherwood Park Squires (16-1-4) and one behind the second-place SSAC Bulldogs (15-5-1) with two games in hand on both teams. The CAC (2-15-3) is tied for last place.

Jack Zubick (fifth) and Jake Mykitiuk (24th) scored in the Border City. Mykitiuk ranks second in conference scoring with 40 points. Landon Bow (9-2, 2.46 GAA) stopped 36 shots, including 19 in the middle frame.

Period scores were 1-1 and 2-2. The Rage potted the winner with 15:02 to play. The Flyers registered 34 shots on goal.

The St. Albert Merchants shut out the Stony Plain Flyers 7-0 Sunday for their fourth win in five games in December.

The Money Men (15-11) skate into the Christmas break with 10 wins in 13 games. In the west division they rank fourth, one point ahead of the fifth-place Morinville Jets (12-11-0-5).

Curtis Ronaldson (8-8, 3.23 GAA) and Justin Pawlenchuk (7-3, 3.53 GAA) shared the shutout against the last-place Flyers (1-24-0-2) at Akinsdale Arena. Matt Bowles’ hat trick paced the attack. In eight games he has six goals. Nicolas Addessi (11th), Jamie Umbach (sixth), Ryan Creelman (second) and Kyle Beddows (10th) also scored.

The last game before the Mac’s tournament in Calgary for the defending champion St. Albert Slash was Saturday’s 7-2 drubbing of the Spruce Grove PAC Saints at Performance Arena.

The Morin sisters combined for seven points, as Ashley sniped three goals and Deanna had one for the Slash (16-3-3), the host team for the 2011 Esso Cup.

Karly Heffernan added one goal and three assists against the Saints (6-18). She leads the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League in scoring with 37 points in 22 games. Jessica Kampjes and Sabrina Flemming also scored and Krystal Reithmayer picked up four assists. Shots were 49-22 for St. Albert. In net was Chloe Sanderson (8-0-2, 1.64 GAA).

At the Mac’s the Slash are pooled with the Calgary Chaos (11:30 a.m. Sunday), Vancouver Fusion (3:30 p.m. Dec. 28), Medicine Hat (3:30 p.m. Dec. 29) and Saskatoon (8 a.m. Dec. 30).
