At the Mac’s the Raiders finished 2-2 in pool play after going 0-3-1 the previous year.

The game stars for the Raiders were: forward Brady Goebel (5-4 loss against Saskatoon Contacts), defenceman Brett Kulak (6-3 win against Calgary Buffaloes), forward Carson Samoridny (8-3 win against Okanagan Rockets) and goalie Tanner Kovacs (3-1 loss to the Carolina Junior Hurricanes).

In the final, Southside edged Saskatoon 3-2 to become the first Edmonton-based club to win the prestigious tournament. The Southside bench boss is Matt Bachewich of St. Albert, a product of the Raiders Hockey Club coaching ranks and former St. Albert Steel assistant coach.

In the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League, the Raiders (16-6-3) are tied for first overall with the Red Deer Rebels (16-5-3) and Calgary Flames (15-4-5), co-leaders in the south.

In the north the Raiders are five points ahead of Southside (14-7-2), ranked third in the division with two games in hand on St. Albert.

The next home game for the Raiders is Sunday against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (7-10-7) at 2:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The annual Boston Pizza SAPEC Invitational Basketball Tournament wraps up today at Sir George Simpson, Vincent J. Maloney, Lorne Akins and Ecole Sainte Marguerite d’Youville (ESSMY) schools.

The finals are scheduled for ESSMY. Tip off times are 1 p.m. (B boys), 2:15 p.m. (B girls), 3:30 p.m. (A boys) and 4:45 p.m. (A girls).

Thursday’s results from the eight girls’ games and eight boys’ games determined the A and B division brackets.

The spotlight will shine on the St. Albert Curling Club during Tuesday’s grand opening of the facility’s renovated front façade.

Also part of the festivities is the City of St. Albert’s presentation to Olympic gold medallist Marc Kennedy and the unveiling of the club’s wall of fame. The honour roll includes Kennedy, Scott Pfeifer, Don McKenzie, Cathy King, Jackie Rae Greening and the late Hec Gervais. They will be saluted for their national and international accomplishments in the sport.

Tuesday’s ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m. in the new 240-seat banquet room, located upstairs in the Friendly Giant Lounge.
