Today’s semifinals in the A playoff bracket at the John Reid Memorial Tournament start at 1:45 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena and 2:15 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena.

The final of the 33rd annual St. Albert bantam AAA tournament goes 2 p.m. Sunday at Performance Arena.

Daily admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. It’s free for children 10 and under. There is no charge for Raiders Hockey Club and St. Albert Minor Hockey Association players with jackets.

Volunteers are also accepting donations to the St. Albert Food Bank at the tournament.

In the 16-team draw, two pools of four divisions played round-robin games Thursday and Friday to declare the playoff pairings in the A, B and C brackets. Visit www.johnreidmemorial.com for scores and playoff times.

The only St. Albert team to win the tournament was the 1983 Territorial Leasing Sabres.

The 21st annual Optimist Showdown in St. Albert basketball tournament tips off Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at the St. Albert Catholic, Bellerose, Paul Kane and Morinville high schools.

The opening day winners qualify for the championship round and the losing teams compete in the consolation bracket.

The draw is made up of 16 women’s and 16 men’s teams.

The finals are 6:15 p.m. Saturday at St. Albert Catholic (women’s championship), Bellerose (men’s championship), Paul Kane (men’s consolation) and Morinville (women’s consolation).

The St. Albert Skyhawks are the defending women’s champions. The Scona Lords, last year’s men’s division winners, are not returning to defend their title.

On Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days, approximately 80 students from various St. Albert schools will play hockey to raise money for the New Orleans mission trip the St. Albert Catholic High School will be going on in March.

The event will take place at the high school’s outdoor rink at 33 Malmo Drive. A concession stand will be open, as well as indoor washrooms and access to an indoor seating area.

There is still room for teams of five to 10 players to enter. Each player is required to raise a minimum of $50.

Due to the number of people wanting to participate but who don’t want to play hockey, they can take part in a scavenger hunt, snow sculpture competition and other events still to be determined.
