The St. Albert men’s and women’s President’s Cup champions are curling this weekend in the Dominion Club Championships at the Ottewell Curling Club.

The A, B and C winners qualify for provincials in October at the Crestwood. Nationals are in November in Richmond, B.C.

The Craig King rink of Jamie King (last rock thrower), Ralph Killips and sub Elson Keown (filling in for the injured Brian Pfeifer) played their first game Friday against Mike Simmons of Gibbons, but the score was unavailable at press time.

The six-time reigning St. Albert champions finished 2-1 at Dominions last year.

The Kathy Piper rink of Nicole Bellamy, Alison Howes and Laurie Schreiner was in action Friday against Lil Grabinsky of the Saville Sports Centre. Last year Piper lost the C semifinal in an extra end.

The five-time reigning St. Albert women’s club champions will join the King foursome at the Tournament of Champions, April 4 to 7 at the Crestwood. Piper was victorious at cities last year and King finished 0-2.

Meanwhile, Trevor Hoover and Diana Backer of St. Albert are skipping their Granite-based rinks at Dominions. Backer won the A final in 2009 and Hoover was the top finisher on the men’s division last year.

The first draw in the President’s Cup mixed playoffs starts 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the St. Albert Curling Club.

Eight rinks are competing for the right to represent St. Albert at the Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions club playdowns.

The opening game for Doug McLennan, the four-time reigning St. Albert champion and 2010 Tournament of Champions winner, is against Dennis Lafleur. McLennan placed first in the Thursday A division at 11-2-1 and Lafleur was third in the Saturday A division at 8-3-2.

The playoffs continue Tuesday and wrap up next weekend. The final goes April 3 at 5:30 p.m., and if needed, 8 p.m.

The eight-team Manager’s Cup also gets under way Monday.
