Miners lacrosse

The three-time President’s Cup senior B champion St. Albert Miners start off the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League season this weekend.

The Miners run the floor Friday against the host Beaumont Warriors at 8:30 p.m. and Saturday against the Edmonton Warriors at 8 p.m. at JRC Arena.

The first home game is May 12 on Lacrosse Day in St. Albert against the Warriors at 9 a.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Last year, the Miners joined the 1976-78 Vernon Tigers and 1986-88 Fergus (Ont.) Thistles as winners of three consecutive President’s Cups, the longest championship streak in the tournament’s 55-year history.

The Miners finished 8-1 at the eight-team nationals in Nanaimo after going 22-1-1 in the RMLL regular season and playoffs.

Meanwhile, the first game for the junior A Miners is May 11 against the Saskatchewan SWAT at 8:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Miners and Edmonton Blues have combined to form one junior A team this year after the Miners finished 1-15 and the Blues were 3-13 in the five-team RMLL division in 2018.

High school rugby

This week’s metro Edmonton high school rugby fixtures include the follow season-opening matches for St. Albert and Sturgeon teams.

Today at 4:45 p.m. for division two men, the defending champion Bellerose Bulldogs scrum down against the Archbishop Jordan Scots at Lynn Davies Rugby Park while the Paul Kane Blues tackle the J. Percy Page Panthers and the Sturgeon Spirits line up against the St. Francis Xavier Rams at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

Thursday’s division two women’s match between Paul Kane, last year’s finalist, and Memorial Marauders kicks off at 4:45 p.m. at SARFC.

Norwest baseball

The St. Albert Cardinals swing for the fences tonight against the Edmonton Padres in the U18 AAA Norwest Baseball League.

The first pitch is 6:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

Last weekend’s three-game homestand for the defending Tier 1 provincial champions and fourth-place team at nationals was snowed out.

SARFC match

Thursday the St. Albert Rugby Football Club hosts the Alberta Women Premier division lid-lifter against the Pirates at 7 p.m.

Last year both teams qualified for the semifinals as SARFC finished 4-5-1 and the Pirates were 5-5.

Meanwhile, the SARFC division two women’s team in the Edmonton Rugby Union makes its season debut May 11 in Fort McMurray against the Knights at 2 p.m.

The division two women ended last year at 8-1 as ERU semifinalists.
