Slash home game

Tonight marks the second-last game for the midget AAA St. Albert Slash before the Final Frozen Four provincials.

Puck drop is 7:45 p.m. against Calgary Fire (17-8-3) at Go Auto Arena.

The Slash (24-2-1) were winners of 17 of 18 games, as well as 11 straight on home ice, before hosting the Lloydminster Steelers (19-6-1) Friday. The score was unavailable at press time.

The Alberta Female Hockey League regular season ends March 3 for the Slash against the visiting Red Deer Chiefs (9-16-3) at 8:15 p.m.

The Slash have home-ice advantage for the Final Frozen Four, March 22 to 24, and the provincial champion hosts the British Columbia rep in the best-of-three national qualifier in early April.

The 11th annual Esso Cup is April 21 to 27 at Sudbury, Ont.

Sabres play twice

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres close out the regular season in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League with a pair of games this weekend.

The Sabres travel to Lloydminster today to face off against the Bobcats (19-6-6) at 4:15 p.m. and Sunday’s game against the SSAC Southgate Lions (11-14-7) starts at 3:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The third-place Sabres (13-13-5) are two points ahead of SSAC and four back of the second-place Sherwood Park Flyers (17-14-1) with one less game played.

The best-of-three divisional semifinals are scheduled for next week.

The third win in four games for the Sabres was 6-3 over the Maple Leafs (3-27-1) Wednesday in St. Albert.

Goal scorers were Marko Stolic and captain Levi Fesyk in the first period, Aidan Taylor (power play) and Carmelo Crandell in the middle frame and Ryan Arnold (power play) and Michael Romeo (shorthanded) in the third.

Romeo and Declan Dika picked up two assists apiece.

Shots were 49-30 for the Sabres with Luke Roberts (6-4-3, 2.95 GAA) between the pipes.

The 2018 AMBHL provincial finalists are 8-1-1 after the Christmas break.

Peewee 1 Blues

The St. Albert Blues are celebrating a successful season on and off the ice.

The peewee 1 Blues 19-0 (133 GF/39 GA) are 19-0 (133 GF/39 GA) in league play before completing the Hockey Edmonton regular season against Spruce Grove today at 11:45 a.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena.

The Blues also made a friend for life at the recent peewee A Tournament of Champions in Brandon. While attending a Brandon Wheat Kings game, the Blues met a boy named Jack and his mom. The players quickly bonded with Jack, who is unable to play hockey because of his special needs. In a display of compassion and humility, Jack was made an honourable player of the Blues for the weekend, wore a Blues’ jersey with the C on it, rode the team bus, and got to warm up and hang out with the players in the dressing room.

After a game, Jack was announced as the team’s honorary MVP and was presented with a hockey stick that every player had signed.

No-hit tournament

The winner of the third annual midget no-hit tournament, hosted by the St. Albert Minor Hockey Association, was the Warman Cheetahs.

Sunday’s final was 5-2 for the Saskatchewan team against the St. Albert Eagles at Go Auto Arena.

The day before, the Eagles defeated Warman 3-1.

The Simons Valley Storm of Calgary finished third.

The female Edmonton Capitals, Sherwood Park, Calgary Mavericks, St. Albert Whalers and the female St. Albert Hawks also competed in the eight-team tournament.
