The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres and the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club host the 34th annual bantam AAA invitational tournament. The 16-team draw starts Thursday at 8 a.m. The Sabres are in the same pool as the Notre Dame Hounds, Los Angeles Selects and Cloverdale Colts.

The 49th annual Edmonton Minor Hockey Week is underway for St. Albert teams in the novice, atom, peewee, bantam, midget and female divisions.

More than 8,700 players with 518 teams from Edmonton and area will take part in 739 games in 19 arenas on 29 sheets of ice during the 10-day tournament. There are 72 championship games scheduled.

Game admission is $3 and a tournament pass is $5. Seniors and youths get in free.

The St. Albert Skyhawks remain undefeated in metro Edmonton premier women’s basketball after beating the winless Salisbury Sabres 66-29 Monday in Sherwood Park.

Grade 10 rookie Kayla Ivicak led all scorers with 18 points. Paige Knull added 12 points and Zoe Downing had 10 for the two-time reigning 3A provincial champions.

The victory was the fourth in league play and the 11th in 15 games this season for the No. 1-ranked 3A high school team in Alberta.

The next league game for the Skyhawks after the exam break is Feb. 1 against the Spartans (3-0) at 6:15 p.m. at O’Leary High School. The Spartans are ranked seventh in 4A.

The Skyhawks are also hosting a tournament Feb. 2-4 at the SkyDome. The draw features eight women’s and eight men’s teams.

The Paul Kane Blues lost the bronze-medal game at the 44th annual BRIT Bedford Road high school basketball tournament last weekend in Saskatoon.

The score was 61-41 for the Garden City Saints of Winnipeg.

The Blues tipped off the men’s draw with a 55-52 win over the Michael A. Riffel Royals of Regina and in the semifinal lost 54-44 to the St. George’s Saints of Vancouver.

The 2011 metro Edmonton premier men’s champions are 9-6 overall going into the exam break.

League play resumes Feb. 1 for the Blues (3-1) against the St. Francis Xavier Rams (2-0) at 4:45 p.m. at Paul Kane. In the 4A provincial rankings the Rams are second and the Blues are sixth.
