In the north division the Raiders (18-8-3) are ranked first and the Kings (15-11-2) are fourth.

The Raiders are 2-2 in the new year after posting the same record at the Mac’s tournament in Calgary during the Christmas break.

After tonight the Raiders have four games left until the playoffs start. Their next home game is Sunday against the Calgary Royals (14-8-7). Faceoff is 2:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena. The team is 9-3-1 at home and 9-5-2 on the road.

Clownball is coming to Sturgeon Composite High School next Wednesday.

The Fabulous Harlem Crowns basketball team will hoop it up against the Sturgeon Spirits varsity men’s team at 7 p.m. Tickets are $9 in advance or $10 at the door. They are available at the school, Johnny’s Store and from any Sturgeon player.

The night of fun starts at 6 p.m. with the Sturgeon women’s alumni game.

The Crowns were formed in the late 1950s by Charles Smith, a former member of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters for 12 years. He later sold the franchise rights to a group of northern California businessmen.

The name of the game for the Crowns is razzle-dazzle ball handling, precision pass patterns, trick shooting and slapstick comedy.

They are scheduled to play 150 games in the United States, Canada and Asia this year.

The St. Albert peewee AA Junior Saints showcased their hockey prowess at the Edmonton Oilers’ skills competition Saturday at Rexall Place.

The Saints participated in the same drills as the Oilers while rubbing shoulders with the NHL players. The skills categories consisted of shooting accuracy, hardest shot, fastest skater, king of the shootout and puck control relay.

Prior to the big event, the Saints were one of four teams to take part in the peewee skills provincial final. The teams were selected randomly after submissions of on-ice skill testing were sent in to Hockey Alberta earlier in the season. From those four teams, the Saints were picked to play in the Oilers skills competition and the other three teams received complimentary tickets to the event.

The St. Albert Tigers are recruiting players to form a second team in the Sunburst Baseball League.

The goal is to field a young line-up of Tabbies in hopes of joining the North Central Alberta Baseball League in 2012.

Last year the veteran-laden senior Tigers struggled at both the Sunburst and provincial levels.
