The bantam AAA St. Albert Cardinals split Saturday’s doubleheader with an up and down performance in Sherwood Park.

In the opening game the Cardinals banged out 20 hits to outscore Sherwood Park Green 18-12. Mat Brisson singled three times and doubled once to pace the attack. Riley Moskaluk also stroked a single and a triple.

Carson Bokenfohr, Lyndon Galvin and Layne Viveiros shared pitching duties as the team added to their depth on the mound.

“You can never have enough pitching and by giving some of the guys a chance to throw some innings it will only make us stronger as the season unfolds,” said field manager Dave Maguire.

In a rare loss, the Cardinals fell 3-2 to the Red Deer Braves to complete the twin bill.

The Braves scored three unearned runs in a game that featured several base running mistakes by the Cardinals.

It’s game on again for the hottest high school sports rivalry in St. Albert, when the Bellerose Bulldogs and St. Albert High Skyhawks huddle up Oct. 7 at Riel Recreation Park.

The switch in conferences by Bellerose from the Miles to the Carr in metro Edmonton football signalled the rebirth of the Showdown in St. Albert. Bellerose will field potentially its best senior team since winning the 2008 Miles final. Bellerose elected to play up in Carr this year to give its players a higher level of competition. Most of the players with this year’s St. Albert Storm, the tier II playoff winners in the Capital District Minor Football Association, will play senior or junior at Bellerose this fall.

The last grudge match between the St. Albert programs was staged in 2007, a 38-0 Skyhawks win. Starting with the inaugural 1999 showdown the Skyhawks have dominated Bellerose with victories of 42-8, 42-22, 42-0, 60-0, 39-3 and 17-2.

The addition of Bellerose and the Archbishop Jordan Scots gives the Carr six teams, compared to only four last year.

In the 2009 metro playoffs the Skyhawks and Bellerose were eliminated in the semifinals of their respective conferences.
