St. Albert swimmers with the Edmonton Olympian club are making a splash at the Canadian age group championships at the Pan Am Pool in Winnipeg.

In the 13-14 girls’ 800 freestyle relay Thursday, the team of Emily Flowers, Berkley Nowlan, Paige Kremer and Edmonton’s Arynn deLeeuw broke the national record by six seconds with a time of 8:48.47.

Kremer, 13, also established new provincial standards in winning the 100 free (57.71) and 50 back (30.97) Thursday. The day before she was victorious in the 100 fly and 200 back.

At the recent provincial long course championships, Kremer collected six gold medals, one silver, and set a new provincial record in the 200 back.

Flowers also shone at provincials with four gold, one silver, and one bronze, as well as four relay gold medals with teammates Nowlan, Kremer and deLeeuw.

Also contributing to the Olympians’ medal count at nationals Thursday was Flowers in the 13-14 100 free (bronze, 59.26), Bruno Sharpe in the 17-18 boys’ 400 IM (silver, 4:38.49), Georgia Kidd in the 11-12 girls’ 50 back (bronze, 32.56) and Braeden Newton in the 17-18 boys’ 50 back (bronze, 27.70, which broke his club record).

In the opening day of the competition, Newton won the 200 back and took bronze in the 50 breast. Flowers was the silver medallist in the 100 fly and bronze medallist in the 200 back.

Podium finishes by St. Albert athletes at the Alberta Summer Games in the Peace Country were highlighted by zone 5 winning the athletics division.

The latest zone 5 medal winners from St. Albert during the first shift of competition are as follows:

Morgan Walker: gold – U15 female 100m (12.94), 200m (26.59), 4x100m relay (53.37), shot put (10.94m) and medley relay (4:32.55).

Hayley Francois: gold – U15 female 1,200m (3:49.89), medley relay (4:32.55); silver – 800m (2:25.78).

Tyler Lazarenko: gold – U15 male 100m (12.05), 4x100m relay (47.78), medley relay (3:59.04); bronze – 200m (25.04).

Braden MacIver: gold – U15 male 4x100m relay (47.78), medley relay (3:59.04); silver – 200m hurdles (29.05).

Hanna Voigt: gold – U17 female 400m (1:03.04) and medley relay (4:29.54).

Hilary Mercier: silver – U7 female heptathlon (2,568 points).

Alyssa McNamara: gold – 13-14 female 1,500 free (19:43.38); silver – 100 fly (1:15.57), 400 free (5:00.77); bronze – 200 fly (2:59.46), 400 freestyle relay (4:39.65), 200 medley relay (2:25.35) and 400 medley relay (5:28.53).

Hayley Basterash: gold – 11-12 female 200 freestyle relay (2:08:12), 400 freestyle relay (4:50:81), 400 medley relay (5:22.77); silver – 200 medley relay (2:29.92); bronze – 100 back (1:22.66).

Tyler Moroz: silver – 13-14 male 50 free (27.97).

Mack Flowers: silver – 11-12 male 100 free (1:06.62).

Ryan Anderson, Marcus Blair, Carson Bokenfohr, Jay Florkevich, Riley Moskaluk, Layne Viveiros: silver.

The summer games feature 15 sports in a split shift format. Inline hockey, rugby, mountain biking, beach volleyball and canoe/kayak were also staged prior to Friday’s turnaround day. The second shift includes basketball, water polo, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball and BMX biking.

The St. Albert Angels ’94 play their first game at the Bantam Girls Canadian Fastpitch Championship in Victoria next Saturday against the Richmond (B.C.) Islanders ’94.

Both teams finished second overall in their respective provincial championships for a berth at nationals.

Also grouped with the Angels in the red pool are the Saskatoon Raiders, Morden Bulldogs (Manitoba 2), Guelph Gators (Ontario 1) and the Quebec Rebelles ’94 (Quebec 1).

The blue pool consists of the White Rock Renegades ’94 (B.C. 1), Calgary Rockies (Alberta 1), Winnipeg Lightning (Manitoba 2), Ajax Raiders (Ontario 2), Quebec Rebelles ’95 (Quebec 2) and the host Victoria Devils.
