The Angels qualified for nationals as the provincial finalists. They fell 6-5 to the Calgary Rockies for the title.

Kelly Fagan and Khalil Bertin of the Paul Kane Blues are hooping it up with Team Alberta this week at the Canada Basketball U17 juvenile national championships.

Fagan, a six-foot-one forward, is the tallest player on the provincial female roster. The junior high product of the Richard S. Fowler Falcons is going into third season with senior varsity Blues.

Bertin, a five-foot-11 guard, played for the senior Blues in Grade 10. The former standout of the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders made the U15 provincial midget team last year.

Nationals are being staged in Toronto for the females and Winnipeg for the males.

The St. Albert Steel added forward Topher Flanaghan to their line-up in a deal with the Canmore Eagles for future considerations.

Flanaghan, 19, scored eight goals (three on the power play and two shorthanded) and added 12 assists in 57 games last season. The five-foot-eight and 160-pound skater broke into the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 2008/09 and tallied six goals and eight assists in 51 games with Canmore.

The product of the Southside Athletic Club generated nine goals and 16 assists in 34 games in his last season of midget AAA.

Meanwhile, the Steel’s third annual golf tournament tees up Aug. 25 at the Sandpiper Golf and Country Club. Registration is at 12:30 p.m. and the shotgun start is 1:30 p.m. The cost is $125, which includes the green fee, cart and awards reception. Three players with the midget AAA St. Albert Slash have been shortlisted by the U18 provincial female team in preparation for the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

Slash forwards Melissa Kueber of St. Albert and Jessica Kampjes of Gibbons and defenceman Tegan Rose of Gibbons are among 28 players moving on to the next stage of evaluations for the Feb. 19 to 27 tournament in Halifax, N.S.

The U18 selection process started with two regional evaluation sessions in May, where a combined total of 160 players competed for 46 spots at the provincial camp last month in Camrose.

From the short-listed players, a select group will be chosen to play at an elite female tournament at Regina in September. All the candidates will be scouted with their club teams before the final 20-player roster is declared.

Also attending the provincial camp from the Slash were defencemen Paige Foster of Slave Lake and Eliza Snider of Fort Saskatchewan and forwards Angie Mason of St. Albert and Krystal Reithmayer of Fort Saskatchewan.

The Slash are the host team for the 2011 Esso Cup national female midget championship, April 17 to 23 at Servus Credit Union Place.
