The top three teams in each pool qualify for the medal round and the next three teams play for consolation honours.

Saturday’s playoffs begin at 8 a.m. In the medal round, St. Albert Catholic High School hosts the women’s semifinals at 5:30 p.m., the third-place match at 7 p.m. and the final at 8 p.m. Morinville Community High School is the venue for the men’s semifinals at 5:30 p.m., the third-place match at 7 p.m. and the final at 8 p.m. The consolation finals are 7 p.m. at Paul Kane High School for women and Bellerose Composite High School for men.

The Paul Kane Blues are the reigning women’s champions. In last year’s final they swept the Vegreville Cougars 25-19, 25-17.

A new men’s champion will be crowned with the Steinbach (Man.) Sabres not returning to defend their 2009 title.

Before the WCC was downsized to 48 teams in 2005, it was billed as the largest high school volleyball tournament in Canada with 96 teams.

Pride is on the line Monday, when the Paul Kane Blues and Bellerose Bulldogs hook up in metro Edmonton premier women’s volleyball. The first serve goes at 6:15 p.m. at Bellerose Composite High School.

Paul Kane is 5-1 (16 GW/3 GL) and Bellerose is 3-3 (12 GW/11 GL).

Both teams competed at the 2009 4A provincials. Paul Kane finished seventh and Bellerose was 10th.

In the recent 4A provincial rankings, Paul Kane was an honourable mention as the only premier team in metro listed.

Paul Kane is coming off a 3-0 win over the Ardrossan Bisons (3-3). Bellerose also swept the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders (2-3) in three sets.

The first loss of the season for the St. Albert Flyers in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League was Wednesday’s 4-3 setback to the SSAC Bulldogs at Akinsdale Arena.

Period scores were 1-1 and 2-2. The teams traded goals in the third, with the Bulldogs (2-1-1) netting the game winner with 13:25 to play.

Mitchell Bokenfohr, Taylor Fontaine and Luc Lalor scored for the Flyers (3-1). They were outshot 28-23. In net was Tanner McCorriston (1-1, 3.50 GAA)

In the north conference scoring race, Jake Mykitiuk is the points leader with 12 after assisting on Lalor’s goal to make it 3-3.

Sebastien Auray (5-5-10), Lalor (3-6-9), Gabriel Chabot (4-3-7), Taylor Fontaine (4-2-6) and Jeff Harrison (1-4-5) also rank among the top point producers.

Next week the Flyers have home games scheduled Wednesday against the Leduc Oil Kings (3-1) at 7:45 p.m., Saturday against the Sherwood Park Squires (3-0-1) at 8 p.m. and Sunday against the Grande Prairie Storm (0-2) at 12:45 p.m.
