Dieter Knobloch was posthumously recognized as a leader in developing and delivering a recreational program in St. Albert with the 2010 provincial Energize Award.

It’s presented each year as part of the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association’s annual conference and workshop.

The Alberta government, together with the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, sponsors the Energize Award, which is also known as the Recreation Volunteer Recognition Award. Since the award program began more than 30 years ago, 189 Albertans have been honoured.

For 40 years, Knobloch dedicated his life to the sport of soccer in St. Albert. His involvement and passion extended from the local level to the provincial and international levels. Whether as a board member, coach or referee, his efforts were a testament to his commitment and lifelong love of the game.

As a builder, Knobloch was instrumental in the planning, supervision and ongoing development of the soccer facility at Riel Park.

Knobloch also founded the St. Albert Rangers Soccer Club and was a colourful team fixture for more than 25 years.

After a 10-year battle with cancer, Knobloch passed away June 30.

Andy Tiedemann of St. Albert is one of five props named to the Canadian roster for next month’s four-match tour of Europe.

Games are scheduled against Belgium, Spain, Georgia and Portugal.

The national senior team is 2-1 this year with Tiedemann in the starting 15 at the Churchill Cup, with wins over France A and Uruguay and a loss to the England Saxons in the final.

Last year at the Churchill Cup the standout with the University of Victoria Vikes started against Georgia and Ireland as the youngest player with the Canadian squad. He has six caps in eight appearances with Canada.

Tiedemann, 22, is a contender to make Canada’s roster for the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.

The rugby product of the Lorne Akins Gators, Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert Rugby Football Club also played high school football with the St. Albert High Skyhawks.

Alberta Golden Bears’ linebacker Jean-Marc Jones was named the defensive player of the week in Canada West football.

The high school product of the St. Albert High Skyhawks made seven tackles (six solo), sacked the quarterback once (12th career sack for 68 total yards), picked off a pass (sixth career interception) and forced a fumble in his final home game to help the Golden Bears clinch a playoff spot and earn a 46-21 victory over the Manitoba Bisons (1-6) Saturday at Foote Field.

The fifth-year Golden Bear intercepted a Khaleal Williams’ pass at the Alberta two-yard line early in the first quarter and forced Williams to cough up the ball early in the second quarter, leading to a Golden Bears’ touchdown on the ensuing drive.

The science student is third in the conference in tackles for losses and fourth in sacks. He has now accumulated 162.5 tackles all-time for fourth place in team history. He led the Bears in tackles last year with 53.

The Paul Kane High School graduate is a three-time academic All-Canadian and in 2009 played in the CIS East-West Bowl.

The Golden Bears close out the regular season this Saturday against Skyhawks’ grad Chris Dobko and the Calgary Dinos (5-2) at McMahon Stadium.
