SAPEC finals
The St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high basketball Tier I championships rattle the rim Thursday at the SkyDome.
The girls’ final between the Richard S. Fowler Falcons, winners of the last three SAPEC playoff banners, and the Sir George Simpson Voyageurs starts at 5:30 p.m. and both teams are 9-1.
Fowler edged Simpson 44-43 in league play and the final of the SAPEC Boston Pizza Invitational Tournament was 31-30 for the Voyageurs against the Falcons.
A new champion will be crowned in the 7 p.m. boys’ final between the 10-0 Lorne Akins Gators and 7-3 Morinville Wolves.
In previous games, the Gators beat the Wolves 82-79 in the regular season and 58-47 in the SAPEC tournament final.
The Gators knocked off Fowler (6-4) in last week’s semifinal 84-68 as the big three – Austin Walter (30 points, 11 rebounds), Seni Adekunle (27 points, 11 rebounds) and David Luu (17 points, eight rebounds) – paced the attack against the two-time defending champions.
Last year’s final was 44-37 for Fowler against the Gators.
Midget AA playoffs
St. Albert teams remain undefeated after four games in the Besa division playoff tournament of the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.
Saturday's results in Spruce Grove were 5-2 for the Source for Sports Crusaders against the Sturgeon Sting and 6-3 for the Steel against the PAC Saints.
The winner of the seven-team Besa playoff advances to the best-of-three metro conference final starting this weekend against the Anderson division tournament rep.
The remainder of the Besa tournament schedule included Tuesday's games for both teams and the scores were unavailable at press time.
Tonight's final is expected to start at 7:45 p.m. at Tri-Leisure Centre.

The Crusaders (28-3-1) finished first overall in the 23-team NAMHL and the Steel (25-5-2) placed second behind the reigning Playoff Cup champions in the Besa standings while tied with the NEBC Yukon Trackers (25-5-2) of the Milltech division for the second-most points in league play.
The Steel beat the Crusaders in league play 6-4 and 8-6.
Gymnastics meet
The first of eight competitive sessions at the Spring Flip Invitational starts 3:45 p.m. Friday at St. Albert Gymnastics Club.
The three day-meet features 15 clubs from across the province and 340 athletes in the five to 17 age-range performing in the J.O. 1 to 10 levels and Aspire.
Representing the host St. Albert club are 49 athletes.
Admission is $7 per person, $5 for students and seniors and $20 for a family of four.
