Acadia, Ryerson to play for fifth place at U Sports women's Final 8

TORONTO — The host Ryerson Rams and No. 6 Acadia Axewomen will play for fifth place at the U Sports women's Final 8 basketball tournament after winning their consolation bracket matchups on Friday.

Sofia Paska led the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds as the No. 8 Rams beat the No. 5 Regina Cougars 63-45 in the second of two consolation games at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Christina McCusker finished with 19 points in her final game in a Cougars uniform.

Earlier in the day, Haley McDonald scored a game-high 34 points as the Axewomen pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the No. 7 Concordia Stingers 86-74.

Myriam Leclerc paced the Stingers with 21 points.

The championship semifinals go Saturday with the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies against the No. 2 McMaster Marauders and No. 4 Ottawa Gee-Gees versus the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or.

Ryerson and Acadia will play the fifth-place game on Sunday ahead of the bronze-medal match and championship game later in the day.
