No. 1 Ryerson advances to semifinals at U Sports women's basketball championships

KINGSTON, Ont. — Rachel Farwell drained seven three-pointers to lead the No. 1 ranked Ryerson Rams to a dominating 80-49 win over the UPEI Panthers in the opening game of the U Sports women’s basketball championship at Queen's University on Thursday.

Farwell, a third-year forward out of Rothesay, N.B., scored a game-high 25 points on 8-for-15 shooting.

Mikaela Dodig, a first-year guard from Bolton, Ont., added 13 points for the Rams who advanced to Saturday's semifinal against No. 4 Brock, which defeated No. 5 Acadia 85-74.

Ivana Twumasi had  20 points for Brock while Madalyn Weinert added 18 points. Acadia's Jayda Veinot finished with a game-high 23 points.

Lauren Rainford, a second-year forward from Toronto, scored a team-high 12 points for the eighth-seeded Panthers, who will play in one of Friday's two consolation games.

Kyanna Giles scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter as No. 3 Winnipeg defeated No. 6 Laval 81-67. Sabrine Khelifi had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Rouge et Or.

Julia Chadwick scored 18 points and Emma Weltz added 16 points as the seventh-seeded Queen’s Gaels upset the second-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies 62-55.  Carly Ahlstrom had a game-high 29 points and eight rebounds for Saskatchewan.
