It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nickolas (Nick) Eskiw on November 30, 2023. He was 80 years of age.

Nick was born outside of Thorhild Alberta and grew up on a near-by farm with his father Mike and mother Annie along with his brothers Russel, Alec, Peter, and Joseph as well as his sisters Eva and Marie. After marrying his wife Della (married in 1966) and with their daughter Sherri Green (Darcy), Nick moved to Fort McMurray where his sons Michael (Shawna) and Christopher (Nicole) were born. In 1986, Nick returned to central Alberta where he settled in St. Albert surrounded by family including his grandsons Eric and Hunter.

Nick always had a smile and a joke, sometimes very colorful, for those around him. He was a man of extreme character and honor; if Nick made a commitment, he stood by his word. He was caring and compassionate all of those around him, even those who were complete strangers.

Nick was a man of deep empathy. Although it may not have shown on the surface, he felt for others on an intense level. Nick had many hobbies, one of which was wood working and making willow furniture as well as creating unique wood keepsakes, which he was happy to share and give away. Nick had a passion for the outdoors and nature. He was heavily involved with the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors Association where he shared his knowledge with new generations of hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Nick had a special admiration for our Canadian RCMP officers, the military and anyone in uniform whose job it was to help others, a reflection of his own personality. It should also be mentioned that he cherished his beloved River and Jorja, his two cats.

A service will be held at the Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Tuesday, December 12, 2023, in Thorhild, Alberta, at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon at the Thorhild Community Centre at 1:00 pm.

We would also like to thank Unit 17 at Sturgeon General Hospital in St. Albert for the wonderful care and respect they gave Nickolas.

In lieu of flowers, donations are to be made to the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors Association (AHEIA; https://aheia.com/donate).
