March 11, 1939 - February 5, 2022

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Joseph (Joe) Gruber of St. Albert, announce his passing on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the age of 82 years after a brief battle with Cancer.

Joe will be lovingly missed and remembered by Muriel, his wife of 23 years; step children Michael Swystun, Orlene Phelan (Shawn) and Laurie Frazer. He will also be deeply missed by his three youngest grandchildren Krosby and Bauer Phelan and Mekenna Swystun who brought so much joy to Joe's life. Joe is survived by his siblings Frank (Johanna), Rita (Allan), Hilda, Rev. Fr. George; and numerous other family members including grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his mother Barbara and father Frank.

Joe was born near Handel, SK on March 11, 1939. He grew up on the family farm that he eventually took over and continued to farm until his retirement. At the age of 59, he married his one true love Muriel, making him a husband, father and grandfather for the first time, all with one "I do”. Together Joe and Muriel retired in Battleford, SK and often vacationed at their cabin near Big River. This is where Joe spent many of his days doing what he loved best, fishing with his son Michael and granddaughter Mekenna.

In 2015, Joe and Muriel decided it was time to move to St. Albert to be closer to family. Over the next 6 years, Joe enjoyed life by becoming his grandson's Krosby and Bauer's biggest sports fan while watching and cheering them on while they played hockey, baseball and football. Joe was also a huge Toronto Blue Jays fan and turned several trips into what was referred to as "Family Jaycations". Along with his love of sports, Joe enjoyed gardening, thrift shopping and spending as much time with his family as possible.

At Joe's request, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Ahmed at Rivercrest Medical Clinic and the staff at Foyer Lacombe for their care and compassion.
