It is with profound sadness and extensive heartbreak that we announce the passing of Joseph Lutz of Sturgeon County. Joe is survived by Evelyn, his loving wife of 61 years, as well as his children: Doreen (Mervin) Duchscher, Judy Van Hecke, Jo-Anne (Ward) Middleton, Danny Lutz, Kerry (Mark) Vansevenandt, Wayne (Katherine) Lutz, Michael (Daise) Lutz, Jackie (Jody) Stitsen, son-in-law Richard Vansevenandt, 32 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law Annie Lutz and Anita (William) Lutz-Ahronson.
Joseph was predeceased by his daughter Marie Vansevenandt, his son-in-law Roger Van Hecke, his parents Valentine and Sophia Lutz, his brothers Johnny, Christian, Valentine, Andrew, and Anthony Lutz and his sisters Barbara Hesse, Mary Van Brabant, and Agnes Lutz.
Joe was a farmer his whole life. For 74 of his 91 years, he operated a combine to bring in the harvest. He was an influential and inspiring character to his 5 godchildren and to many who visited the farm: nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends of the family. Joe loved to commune with nature and often used hunting and fishing as an excuse to do so. He loved to travel and would marvel about space exploration.
When Joe was a young boy, he spent two weeks with his grandpa John Lutz in Morinville so he could learn his catechism. With a strong, quiet faith, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 58 years and was an active member of the St. Jean Baptiste Parish in Morinville for his entire life. In the last 5 years of his life, Joe dedicated more time to prayer: often praying the rosary three times per day - one with family and two with EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network).
Family was incredibly important to Joseph. Without trying, he taught us to be strong and compassionate. His wisdom and guidance will be treasured in our hearts always. He taught us how to grow old with dignity, humor, and kindness. When God called Joe home, he met Him with courage and with joy in the promise of what lies ahead. We have an Angel watching over us and we call him Dad/Grandpa.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Father Trini Pinca for giving Joe the Sacrament of the sick and to the staff of the Sturgeon Community Hospital for their care, attention, and compassion for Joe and the entire Lutz family. The family values the sentiments and prayers of the extended family and the community as they hold a private funeral for Joseph.
