As we navigate the turbulent waters of today's world, it becomes increasingly apparent that humanity is caught in a whirlwind of discord, division, and suffering. From political strife to social injustice, from economic inequality to environmental concerns, our planet is in crisis — one that seems insurmountable. In the midst of this turmoil, it is worth reflecting on the timeless story of Christianity and the profound lessons it holds for us today.
We are an Easter people is a refrain you will hear from Christians this time of year. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is one of the most significant events in human history, revered by millions as a symbol of sacrifice, redemption, and love. Yet, beyond its religious significance, the story of Christ's crucifixion offers profound insights into the nature of human frailty and the capacity for cruelty within our species.
In the biblical narrative, Jesus Christ is betrayed by those closest to him, condemned by a corrupt and unjust system, and ultimately subjected to the most brutal form of execution known to humanity: crucifixion. His agonizing death on the cross is a stark reminder of the depths of human depravity and the capacity for individuals and institutions to inflict suffering upon the innocent.
Today, as we bear witness to the myriad of injustices and atrocities unfolding around the world, it is impossible not to draw parallels between the suffering of Jesus Christ and the plight of countless individuals who are marginalized, oppressed, and persecuted. From the victims of war and conflict to the survivors of systemic discrimination and exploitation, millions of people endure untold suffering each day, their cries for justice drowned out by the clamour of a world consumed by greed, power, influence, and indifference.
Just as Jesus Christ was betrayed by those closest to him, we are witnessing a betrayal of trust and integrity on a global scale. Politicians and so-called leaders who pledge to represent the interests of the people often betray their constituents for personal gain. Likewise, individuals who profess values of compassion and empathy frequently betray their fellow human beings through acts of hatred, violence, and indifference.
In the face of such betrayal and suffering, it is tempting to despair, to succumb to cynicism and resignation. Yet, the Easter story does not end with his crucifixion; it ends with Christ’s resurrection, a testament to the enduring power of hope, faith, and love. Similarly, in the midst of today's turmoil, we must cling to the belief that another world is possible, that justice will prevail, and that the forces of darkness will ultimately be overcome by the light of truth and righteousness.
It is incumbent upon every one of us to heed the lessons of Christianity’s Easter, to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and the marginalized and to strive for a world where all are treated with dignity, compassion and respect. Only then can Christians truly honour the memory of Jesus Christ and the sacrifice he made for humanity. Christianity is a verb, not a noun. It is an action practised. As St. Francis of Assisi is quoted, “Preach the gospel every day and only use words when necessary.”
As we confront the turmoil of today's world, let us remember the story of Jesus Christ and the profound lessons it holds for us all. Let us reject the betrayal and cruelty that led to his crucifixion and instead embrace the values of love, justice, and solidarity that he embodied. And let us work tirelessly to build a world where suffering is alleviated, injustice is eradicated and peace prevails for all.
