I was disappointed in reading the commentary by Ken Allred, "The West wants out," in the Aug. 12 edition of the Gazette. A former Reform party representative rekindling the anti Trudeau rhetoric with the headline "the west wants out" and arguments from the '80s just doesn't sit well.

In my world, most western Canadians are ardent supporters of our confederation even with all its flaws, and the idea of destroying it is unconscionable. As for Mr. Nelson (I hardly ever agree with his opinion anyhow), the headline reading "cruel September" is just fearmongering. The moneys borrowed to help people during this summer's crisis were never meant to be paid back in just one month. The plan was always to pay off the deficit over time.

This kind of commentary smacks of yellow journalism and I'm unhappy to see it in our local paper. The right wing already has enough champions for its causes in this neck of the woods.
