LETTER: Simple questions on COVID-19 response

"Why did people lose their jobs, their homes, the time with their families, even the ability to attend funerals for their loved ones? Why were people stripped of their peace of mind, hope and faith in the future?"

Thank you, Tom Andrews, for your common sense letter "No happy ending" in the July 1 Gazette.  You summed it up perfectly.  I am just an ordinary person who would not be able to govern a country, but I do have some simple questions.

Why was our money not spent on proper care of our elderly in the first place so that the numbers of deaths from COVID-19 would have been so much lower and those that passed away would not have gone out of this world alone? Why were people left to wait for surgery, to live with fear, to suffer and some to die with other diseases such as cancer? Why was the world economy destroyed? Why did people lose their jobs, their homes, the time with their families, even the ability to attend funerals for their loved ones? Why were people stripped of their peace of mind, hope and faith in the future?

Those "in charge" (heaven help us) decided to stop the world in its tracks to fight this virus. What good did it do? As the world continues to turn, there will be many viruses. As Mr. Andrews asked in his letter, "What's the plan for the next virus?"
