I am writing in support of Lexi Pendzich, who is putting her enthusiasm, research and advocacy skills to work, in order to bring the issue of bike racks on buses to the fore, an effort which should be unnecessary since some other cities have moved forward at least a decade ago.

The City of St. Albert must have been aware of the possibility of bike racks on buses for some time, however, as with most issues which are good for the environment, the city has chosen to ignore, and more recently, show a very half-hearted interest at best in supporting a very beneficial service for it's residents. Not only has a source been researched, but the awareness of this source allowing a customer the opportunity to trial these bike racks for a limited time, free of charge has also been brought to the city's attention.

The city would benefit by having healthier residents, as exercise would be encouraged, their reputation as a city which supports and provides access to alternative transport, and is concerned about the cyclists' safety, would emerge, instead of the reputation it is increasingly gaining of only supporting the ever-increasing barren land which is then helping only motorized vehicles, since the transport routes into Edmonton are getting more dangerous.

Having access to bike racks would also show better co-operation with Edmonton, since their residents, some of whom do commute to St. Albert or partake in leisure pursuits within our city, could also use these bike racks. Real estate billboards and publications advertise that St. Albert gives its residents the freedom of multi-use trails. However, would it not be more beneficial to also give access to the convenience of using bicycles for commuting as well? This would also allow easier access not only to work, but also to festivals, which require or encourage leaving the car at home and using transit or biking.

Unfortunately, our transit does not help our residents to access most of these events, forcing the use of a motorized vehicle or a very convoluted, sometimes impossible transit route. This is truly short-sighted as the rich cultural experiences gained greatly benefit all those who attend. Many of these festivals are regionally, nationally and /or internationally renowned for their quality. Don't all residents of our city deserve an equal opportunity to participate, not only those with vehicles?

Our quality of life is important and it is the city's responsibility to support endeavours that increase this quality, which is seen by many as steadily deteriorating. I encourage other individuals who have a keen interest in seeing and using bike racks on buses, to write in to the editor, send an email or write to the mayor and phone his office so the matter is taken seriously.
