I don’t think that the stories that we are reading in our local newspapers that St. Albert doubled its amount of recycled materials this summer can be quite true. A lot of people living on the west side of St. Albert Trail used to take their recyclable material to the recycling bins at the bottle depot on Riel Drive rather than driving all the way over to the city’s recycling depot in the Campbell Business Park. That’s what I’ve always done and so did a lot of my neighbours.
In my experiences since curbside pickup began in the summer, I’ve never seen even 10 light-blue bags on the curbside of my entire crescent — it’s more likely closer to three to five or fewer — and most houses never have any at all. Yet we all have to carry the added fee for curbside recycling of $11 on our St. Albert utility bills whether we get any sort of service from it or not. We are also being told that it will go up even higher in the near future — way up — for absolutely no added on service for the average St. Albert citizen.
