Taxpayers shouldn't subsidize business

I’m not going to even try to understand how this preposterous idea got as far as it did and I’ve never met Bob Russell, but I want to publicly shake his hand, as I shake my head, for his letter published in the Dec. 2 Gazette.

Most of us are so busy seeking out the almighty dollar and running kids to their after-school activities that we often miss some important policymaking going on a little under the radar at city hall. I can’t help but think that is exactly what Landrex is betting on. With a few key people in strategic positions, a busy season and some capital to help persuade the right people and they might actually eventually get this passed.

Why on Earth would the taxpayers of St. Albert want to give Landrex $95 million to subsidize their business of increasing the population of St. Albert? More urban spread has never lowered taxes and improved quality of life. If our city isn’t large enough to support every retail establishment and service that Edmonton has, it isn’t far to go. Am I missing something? If council takes another look at this please join me in voting them out.

Name withheld by request, St. Albert
