Thousands enjoy the farmers' market

This is in response to views on our St. Albert farmers’ market being moved indoors and nut free (Could it have been written by someone who supports the fire pit ban?).

This is in response to views on our St. Albert farmers’ market being moved indoors and nut free (Could it have been written by someone who supports the fire pit ban?). When I first read her letter I was a bit taken back and asked myself, “Is she serious?” I read it again and realized, not only was she seriously making these accusations towards the organizers, she was recommending changing the event completely.

I have some solutions for the problems you experienced at last years farmers’ market:

1) Lack of shaded area equals negligence of organizers — I am sure you are a smart woman and know that any time you venture outdoors in July that you will be subjected to the heat and sun. Can I suggest sunscreen, a hat, an umbrella and extra water bottles to make that heat more bearable?

2) Seasonal allergies equals embarrassing hives — I know quite a few people that experience allergies and it is unfortunate but again, anytime you leave the house, it is a given that you will be exposed to these elements. This is not controllable by the St. Albert farmers’ market.

3) Free samples equals nut allergies — More allergies? I am sure you are always extra careful, whether it be in a grocery store, restaurant, friend’s house, etc. to ask if meals contain nuts. Why not exercise that caution at a farmers’ market as well?

Thousands of people travel from all over the area to come to our market; it’s the kickoff to summer and a part of the city and community. It wouldn’t be the same if they moved it into Grandin mall. Honestly, they don’t call it Western Canada’s largest outdoor farmers’ market for nothing!

Everyone experiences the same weather conditions and many people share in your allergy misfortune. It is all about how you choose deal with it. If these factors are affecting your family experience there is a quite reputable indoor farmer’s market in Old Strathcona held every Saturday.
